How did you get into figure competition?
I have been very athletic my entire life. I was a gymnast and did ballet for about 13 years. I also dove in high school my freshman year. A serious accident to my face while practicing for regionals put a quick stop to that. I was actually afraid to work out in a gym two years ago.
One of my friends convinced me to become his gym buddy, so he put me on his gym membership, which was great due to the fact that I was going through a rough time in my life. The gym became my outlet. My friend and I decided to have a six-pack contest, with the winner receiving a $1000 shopping spree. I couldn't pay up so I had to win. Shortly after the bet was made a trainer came into my office for a massage. I picked his brain, asking him for tips on how to get a six-pack fast. We ended up trading services. He trained me 3x weekly for a 60 minute massage weekly.
One day he had asked me if I would be interested in competing for figure shows. I hadn't a clue what that meant, so we attended a show in Arizona in October of 2004. As soon as I saw the figure girls I decided right at that moment that I wanted to look like that. So I started training for figure that next day.
Note - I did win the six-pack contest though my friend never paid up.
What made you choose to do the USA?
I chose this show because it was in Las Vegas and was said to be the most popular national event of the year. I figured that I had a year to prepare so why not try the hardest first.
What did you think about your chances when you saw your height class backstage?
I have to admit I was completely unsure of the outcome. Everyone looked awesome. I didn't expect to take first. I figured that we all look great and we've all worked so hard to get there, that the only thing that can be done now is to go out there and have fun. What happens simply happens.
What were you feeling as you went into the overall pose down?
A little nervous but still in shock from taking first in my class and knowing I just achieved pro status. At that point it was all about having fun!
How did it feel to win the class and get your pro card?
There were so many different emotions all compiled into one moment. It was the most amazing feeling in my life. To put so much hard work and self-discipline in everyday in hopes to achieve pro status. Having that dream come true is an absolutely awesome feeling.
How do you see yourself matching up in the IFBB?
I need to work on a few areas before doing an IFBB show, but I think I'll do okay once I put on some more volume.
